How can therapy help me?

There are many potential benefits when participating in counseling. First, the therapeutic relationship that is built between client and counselor can provide clients with connection, support, and encouragement. From this foundation, many clients may begin to work towards relieving stressors, decreasing the effects of traumatic experiences, and make desired changes in their lives. People who are depressed may find their mood lifting. Others may no longer feel afraid, angry, or anxious. In therapy, people have a chance to talk things out fully until their feelings are relieved or their problems are solved. Clients’ relationships and coping skills may improve greatly. They may get more satisfaction out of social and family relationships. Their personal goals and values may become clearer. They may grow in many directions—as persons, in their close relationships, in their schooling, and in the ability to enjoy their lives. I believe in the positive gains clients can make through therapy; therefore, I enter our relationship with optimism about our progress together.

How often do I need to come?

I typically recommend weekly 50 minute sessions when we start working together in order to build a therapeutic alliance. Together we will assess your expectations and goals during our intake session and along the way. We may taper down to less frequent sessions as your issues resolve as well as depending on your personal needs.

How long does therapy take?

Counseling is not one size fits all. Each client has a unique personality, array of experiences, thoughts, feelings, and demeanor. Change will sometimes be easy and quick, but more often it will be slow, and may require firm effort on your part to keep working at it. You must understand that there are no instant, painless cures and no “magic pills.”  However, you can learn new ways of looking at your problems that will be helpful for changing your feelings and actions.
